How to Take An Effective Mental Health Day Off

The Fair Work Act states that employees can take a mental health day off due to stress-related reasons. While just taking a day off may not reduce a severe underlying problem or burnout, a mental health day off could help to regroup, feel fresh and improve the energy levels.

To avoid feeling stressed about taking a day off, it would be best to schedule the day beforehand. This in turn will help you balance your workload and find a replacement for the day. But in case you feel stressed when you wake up, then it is best to take a mental day off.

if you feel your employer is supportive then it is okay to share your reasons for taking a mental health day off. But, if your employer is less understanding then you are not obligated to share your reasons to miss a day of work.

When you are taking a mental health day off you are using the time to relax. The following activities could help you relax:

  • Attending a yoga class.

  • Sleeping in.

  • Watching TV

  • Going for a nature walk.

  • Swimming or going to the gym.

  • Spending time reading your favorite book.

  • Reducing your everyday stressors.

If you feel that just taking a mental health day off is not reducing your stress levels then plan a vacation, access online resources, share your concerns with your doctor or seek health from a mental health.
